Calçots, a catalan gastronomic tradition!

Calçots Catalunya Gastronomy

The calçotada season has already begun! Today we want to explain you why this phenomenon  attracts crowds of people every year.  Are you ready to discover it?

What is a Calçot and a Calçotada?

Calçots are a tradition of  catalan gastronomy that runs from January to April and brings together family and friends around a table to enjoy a winter barbecue. It is a grilled large and white onion which external side is scorched but the internal one is tender. The region of Valls, in Tarragona, is known as the capital of the calçot. Calçotades have been celebrated in Valls for more than hundred years since the end of the 19th century. From 1995 granted the denomination of quality ‘Calçot de Valls’. The geographical area of this denomination includes the regions of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Tarragonés and Baix Penedés.

Although, calçot is the protagonist, there is no calçotada without romesco sauce, a sauce prepared mainly with almonds, hazelnuts, tomatoes, garlic, oil and salt.

How to eat calçots

The funniest part is to eat calçots. Hands are used instead of cutlery! Take the “calçot” from the top with one hand and with the other hand take it by the root to remove the scorched part. Finally, dip the “calçot” with the sauce and it is ready to be eaten. We recommend you to use the apron not to get dirty but if it happens do not worry!  It’s part of the party!

But it´s not yet finished. After calçots, you will enjoy a barbecue with artichokes, white beans and potatoes and afterwards catalan cream as dessert. And of course… bread with tomato and cava can not miss!

If you are in Barcelona, ou get the chance to participate in a traditional calçotadadon’t miss it! 😉

Sun, views and solidarity magic with the Abracadabra Foundation on the terrace of the Negresco Princess

As every year, all the people who are part of the Negresco Princess Hotel in Barcelona, choose a solidary cause that will be our active and voluntary contribution to the social, economic and environmental improvement of our society.

For the whole team, choosing which will be this annual social action represents an important decision and a commitment. This year, after studding several proposals, our winning cause was the Abracadabra Foundation. A solidarity project that gives magic and smiles to children staying in hospitals to make them have a more pleasant stay. As they say: “Thanks to the solidarity magic we managed to provide an extra dose of illusion very necessary to overcome the difficult moments.”

Abracadabra - Magia Solidaria - Twitter

Last Sunday we were lucky to have a very special magician at the Negresco Princess hotel in Barcelona. Carles Mag, a solidary magician of the Abracadabra Foundation who came to bring us plenty of illusion to adults and children with their visual and participative games. Incredible effects, cards, impossible knots, sponges, coins and many other things that impressed all of us.

An event for all customers and friends who wanted to share with us the illusion of solidarity magic, both in La Terrazza Negresco and in the Negresco Restaurant.

In addition, coinciding with the # SetmanaTerrasses18 that takes place in Barcelona from June 1st to 10th and that organizes the Gremi d’Hotels de Barcelona , on the 3rd we will also have Carles Mag who will once again bring the illusion to all of us, and on Sunday 10th June will be the magician David el Mag who will surprise us with live and impressive magic at the Hotel Barcelona Princess.

Palau de la Música, one of the greatest representatives of Catalan modernism

El Palau de la Música is a music auditorium designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the greatest representatives of Catalan modernism. It was built between 1905 and 1908 and declared a National Monument in 1971.

It was destined to concerts of orchestral and instrumental music, as well as choral interpretations and music productions. However, in the Palau there have also been cultural, political, theatre plays and, of course, the most varied musical performances. Nowadays, this kind of performances are still held. And you can complete the experience with the lovely café and restaurant venues inside, as it is written in the Lexus Magazine.

The Concert Auditorium is the most important venue of its type in Cataluña, and it regularly stages world premieres. When entering, aside from the heavenly skylight, you will be struck by the organ, a bust of Anselm Clavé, another of Beethoven, and a plethora of decorative motifs: palms, fruit, flowers and jewels.

The foyer of the Palau is a great venue that has been converted into a spacious café-restaurant whose culinary highlight is definitely breakfast. It´s a good way to start the visit of the Palau.

The Palau restaurant, at open air and placed on the ground floor in one of the places in Barcelona to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing food. Then, you have The Mirador Restaurant, located at the top of the Plaza del Palau and overlooking the Art Nouveau façade by Domènech i Montaner. It offers a menu of lunch and dinner weekdays (starter, main course and dessert), a tasting menu and a menu with a selection of seasonal cuisine.

This music auditorium is placed in Barcelona, specifically in Sant Pere neighborhood and our Negresco Princess is near to this majestic building, so it is a must if you are on vacation in Barcelona. As tip, we suggest you to see one of its corners where you will see the legend of San Jordi.
