Calçots, a catalan gastronomic tradition!

Calçots Catalunya Gastronomy

The calçotada season has already begun! Today we want to explain you why this phenomenon  attracts crowds of people every year.  Are you ready to discover it?

What is a Calçot and a Calçotada?

Calçots are a tradition of  catalan gastronomy that runs from January to April and brings together family and friends around a table to enjoy a winter barbecue. It is a grilled large and white onion which external side is scorched but the internal one is tender. The region of Valls, in Tarragona, is known as the capital of the calçot. Calçotades have been celebrated in Valls for more than hundred years since the end of the 19th century. From 1995 granted the denomination of quality ‘Calçot de Valls’. The geographical area of this denomination includes the regions of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Tarragonés and Baix Penedés.

Although, calçot is the protagonist, there is no calçotada without romesco sauce, a sauce prepared mainly with almonds, hazelnuts, tomatoes, garlic, oil and salt.

How to eat calçots

The funniest part is to eat calçots. Hands are used instead of cutlery! Take the “calçot” from the top with one hand and with the other hand take it by the root to remove the scorched part. Finally, dip the “calçot” with the sauce and it is ready to be eaten. We recommend you to use the apron not to get dirty but if it happens do not worry!  It’s part of the party!

But it´s not yet finished. After calçots, you will enjoy a barbecue with artichokes, white beans and potatoes and afterwards catalan cream as dessert. And of course… bread with tomato and cava can not miss!

If you are in Barcelona, ou get the chance to participate in a traditional calçotadadon’t miss it! 😉

Color and tradition at the Carnival of Barcelona

If we say Carnival, you will probably think about the Carnival of Brazil, but in Barcelona we also have our peculiar and traditional Carnival.

It is called “Carnestoltes” and is celebrated as a party. This year it will be held from February 8 to 14.

Each city has its ride or “rúa” and Barcelona too. There is also the Carnival King´s ride, the “naranjada” and the big “sarao” that takes place on Sunday afternoon, and on Ash Wednesday the burial of the sardine takes place too.

So Carnival is perfect to come to Barcelona and enjoy the atmosphere of the city. Near the Hotel Barcelona Princess you can enjoy the Carnival in Poblenou, and the Negresco Princess Hotel is in the city center, so you will be able to experience in first person the Carnival of Barcelona.

There is another city very close to Barcelona where carnival is really famous and full of party: Sitges. A big party is organized, full of costumes, feathers, color, music and fun. They know how to have fun and that´s why this is the gay capital of Europe.

Diagonal Avenue, a treasure of Barcelona

Beyond the beaches of Barcelona, we can find much more wonderful places in the city.

Exclusive stores, galleries, shopping centers, are some of the things you can find in Diagonal Avenue.

In the Forum area starting at number 1 of Diagonal we can find the impressive skyscraper of 26 floors, the Barcelona Princess Hotel, designed by the architect Óscar Tusquets.

Walking up through the Diagonal Avenue you will find the Agbar Tower with its controversial shape and that lights the city every night.

Through the Diagonal you will have an easy access to the most emblematic buildings of Antoni Gaudí and other emblematic buildings of the city too, such as Casa de les Punxes designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

From the beginning to end of t his avenue you will find many green areas to rest. The Diagonal itself is green but there are also gardens such as the Diagonal Mar park, Parc del Center in Poblenou and the Pedralbes Park.

You will find more information about this avenue and about Barcelona, in our blog and also in the Smartphone Handy (lexus section) you will find in rooms in both Barcelona Princess and Negresco Princess Hotels
