Calçots, a catalan gastronomic tradition!

Calçots Catalunya Gastronomy

The calçotada season has already begun! Today we want to explain you why this phenomenon  attracts crowds of people every year.  Are you ready to discover it?

What is a Calçot and a Calçotada?

Calçots are a tradition of  catalan gastronomy that runs from January to April and brings together family and friends around a table to enjoy a winter barbecue. It is a grilled large and white onion which external side is scorched but the internal one is tender. The region of Valls, in Tarragona, is known as the capital of the calçot. Calçotades have been celebrated in Valls for more than hundred years since the end of the 19th century. From 1995 granted the denomination of quality ‘Calçot de Valls’. The geographical area of this denomination includes the regions of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Tarragonés and Baix Penedés.

Although, calçot is the protagonist, there is no calçotada without romesco sauce, a sauce prepared mainly with almonds, hazelnuts, tomatoes, garlic, oil and salt.

How to eat calçots

The funniest part is to eat calçots. Hands are used instead of cutlery! Take the “calçot” from the top with one hand and with the other hand take it by the root to remove the scorched part. Finally, dip the “calçot” with the sauce and it is ready to be eaten. We recommend you to use the apron not to get dirty but if it happens do not worry!  It’s part of the party!

If you are in Barcelona, ou get the chance to participate in a traditional calçotadadon’t miss it! 😉

Flamenco in Barcelona, ole!

Flamenco is art and it is part of the culture of Spain that consists on typical dance with music of Andalusia.

Although, Flamenco is not the most traditional in Barcelona as are the “castellers” and “sardanas”, it has been named Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and it is worth to see and enjoy it if Barcelona is your one and only stop in Spain.

To enjoy their color and passion, you must attend a “tablao” which is a space in which flamenco shows are performed. An environment where as well as music, dance and rhythm you can have gastronomy and where the “rebujitos” and “sangrias” can not miss. Here, in the “tablaos” is where you can hear the famous “Ole” with which the “cantaores” and “bailaores” are encouraged.

If you wonder where to see “flamenco” in Barcelona, there are many well known places.

The “Tablao Flamenco Cordobés placed in Ramblas is one of the best-known “tablaos”in the city. It is inspired by Nazarí art and its interior reminds the Alhambra in Granada.

In the middle of Eixample you will find the Palacio del Flamenco. A different tablao that is placed in a former renovated theater and makes it the largest flamenco show in Barcelona.

A reference of “flamenco” in Barcelona is Los Tarantos. A tablao in Plaça Reial that combines the most important flamenco figures with emerging talent full of passion and energy.

The best flamenco tablaos in Barcelona are very close to the Hotel Negresco Princess located in the center of Barcelona and it is also very easy to reach them from the Hotel Barcelona Princess which is perfectly connected to the center of Barcelona.
